Minnesota Primary Guide

The Minnesota Democratic primary takes place on Tuesday, March 3rd and all eligible Minnesotans may participate. This is an open primary, meaning that you do not need to be a registered Democrat to participate. You can even register right at the polls.

Polls are open from 7AM through 8PM. If you are in line before 8PM, you can still vote. You are not required to bring photo ID in order to vote unless you want to register at the polls.

Can I participate even if I’m not a registered Democrat?

Yes! Minnesota has open primaries. At your polling location, you can request the ballot from the party of your choice, not your registration.

So I can register at the polls, what do I need bring with me?

In order to register at your polling location, you will need to bring at least one document with proof of residence. Here is a list of accepted documents.

Who will appear on the ballot?

The Minnesota primary ballot will include several candidates who’ve withdrawn from the race. Here’s a list of active candidates who will appear on the primary ballot:

  • Joe Biden

  • Mike Bloomberg

  • Pete Buttigieg

  • Tulsi Gabbard

  • Amy Klobuchar

  • Bernie Sanders

  • Elizabeth Warren

What is a primary? How is it different from the caucuses that have taken place in Iowa and Nevada?

The Minnesota primary process is much more straightforward than the caucuses that took place in other states. Participants simply go to their standard polling location and vote for their candidate of choice. The experience is very similar to participating in a general election. I have other questions about the process. Can you help?
